Launched on April 1st by the Portuguese Government, Via Verde for Immigration is a streamlined program designed to simplify and accelerate the process of hiring foreign workers. Developed under the Cooperation Protocol for Regulated Labor Migration, this initiative is especially beneficial for industries experiencing labor shortages, including:
- Tourism
- Agriculture
- Construction
- Services
The core goal of the program is to facilitate legal employment, address labor market needs, and strengthen the Portuguese economy with skilled international talent.
Who Can Join the Program?
The protocol is open to entities that meet the following criteria:
- Business confederations or associations with at least 30 member companies and a combined turnover of €250 million
- Companies employing 150 or more workers
- Companies with an annual turnover of €25 million or more
- Companies with no outstanding debts to the Tax Authority or Social Security
- Possession of a valid permanent certificate code
How Does the Application Process Work?
Eligible companies can apply for individual or group work visas for foreign nationals from non-EU countries. The streamlined process includes:
- Submission of the visa request to the Directorate-General for Consular Affairs and Portuguese Communities (DGACCP)
- Scheduling of an interview at the consular office in the worker’s country of residence
- Expedited processing of the visa application through established channels
Visa Requirements for Companies
To qualify for visa approval under Via Verde, companies must guarantee the following for their foreign workers:
- A valid employment contract
- Travel and health insurance
- A training plan and Portuguese language learning support
- Decent housing arrangements
These conditions are designed to promote proper integration, ensure compliance with legal standards, and provide a stable environment for workers.
